WKH Foundation Volunteer Policies and Procedures
The Hotchkiss Foundation regularly takes on volunteers to assist with its many diverse projects. In the past, volunteers and guest lecturers have been essential in the creation of a number of unique and important projects, ranging from biodiversity inventories to creative writing seminars for high school students. If you're a motivated and creative individual interested in giving back in an exciting and friendly atmosphere, volunteering with the Hotchkiss Foundation may be for you!
Our program recognizes the following definition of Volunteers:
Volunteer - A volunteer is a person who by choice and without financial compensation contributes time and service to assist the non-profit organization in fulfilling its mission.
Who can volunteer? How do I volunteer?
In order to maximize the impact of the volunteer’s time and the benefits of the volunteer’s contributions, the Foundation prefers to screen applicants and match the needs of the organization with the goals of the volunteer.
Most of our past volunteers have spent their time helping out as teachers at the Hotchkiss Learning Center. We do not require volunteer teachers to have professional teaching credentials. What we tend to look for in our volunteers are basic English communication skills and unique backgrounds. The HLC’s cultural enhancement program allows volunteers from different parts of the world and with diverse backgrounds to share aspects of their culture with our students (we’ve had great success with classes about international cuisine/food and language).
The Foundation also accepts skilled professionals who offer their services pro bono. We consider such engagements as extremely beneficial in addressing longer-term objectives which require specific expertise. In the past, we have had scientists, engineers, professional educators, musicians and dancers, and writers help us develop our programs and projects.
If you would like to help out in any of the Foundation’s programs, please send us your CV or resumé along with a brief cover letter describing your background, interests, and the specific program that interests you. We are open to receiving project proposals regarding our eco-scouting program and our conservation program. Our email address is [email protected].
Does the WKHF reimburse my travel expenses?
Unfortunately, the Foundation cannot support volunteers’ travel expenses. In general, all of our volunteers (locally- and internationally-based) are responsible for all the transportation and out-of-pocket costs incurred in traveling to and from Cantilan. We do accept volunteers from outside the Philippines but please note that the volunteer is responsible for procuring his/her own travel documents (visas, etc.) and airfare. During the volunteers’ stay, however, costs for meals and basic accommodations are covered by the WKHF.
What are the rules on conduct and safety?
During their stay with the Foundation, volunteers are expected to follow the general rules of conduct that will protect the interest and safety of all volunteers, Foundation staff, and students.
The WKHF aims to provide a safe and healthy environment for all volunteers. However, the WKHF’s general liability coverage does not provide coverage to volunteers for liabilities they may have incurred for their actions. In some instances, volunteers must sign a release absolving WKHF of liability when WKHF volunteers voluntarily and knowingly subject themselves to certain risks while performing volunteer services on behalf of WKHF.
