The Costa del Surf™ project is a collaboration between the Foundation and a private sponsor. The project has two separate tracks – one that's dedicated to the management and development of a local, professional longboard team and the other whose objective would be to promote local interest in longboard surfing and other watersports (kayaking, etc.). Both tracks would eventually support the longer term goal of promoting Cantilan and nearby towns as eco-adventure sites that could eventually be the foundation for the sustainable development of these towns. Equally important is the objective of developing a professional surf team composed of locals who can become ambassadors and advocates of the environment.
Furthermore, teaching our HLC students how to surf is our way of encouraging them to become brave, courageous, self-reliant, and self-confident girls and boys. Through surfing, we are encouraging kids to try something new, to learn how to navigate risk, to not be afraid to fail, and to leave their comfort zones. Ultimately, we want our students to dare to dream boldly and to be different.
In February 2014, the team was fortunate enough to start training together with the help of pro surfers Kyron Rathbone and Manette Alcala (how awesome is that?). Team Costa del Surf/Cantilan is currently composed of Team Captain Charlene "Kitkat" Guillen, Trainer/Asst. Coach Brendo Torrejos, Paul Christian Libay, and Christian Philip "Soysoy" Marzon. Helping with the training are Datdat Parian, Kajing Correos, and Christel Yparraguirre. Joining us for a few days of training were some of the high school students of the Hotchkiss Learning Center who tried surfing for the first time (they were so excited about it that they wore their school uniforms while surfing!).
Big thanks to our team sponsor Alex Bangert and to the rest of the team that made all of this possible: Paul Gocela, Edleine Mae Tico, Rhia Clemenso.

Announcement: 2017 Costa del Surf Competition
The 2017 Costa del Surf Competition is on! HLC students, who have been taking surfing lessons as part of their regular P.E. classes, will compete against other local surfers on April 1, 2017, Saturday. After a quick beach cleanup, the friendly competition will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Parola, Balwarte beach in Cantilan. Various prizes are up for grabs including board shorts, t-shirts, and rash guards. See you there!
Join us in our first grommet competition!
Starting Schoolyear 2015, surfing has been offered at the HLC as an option for students during the Physical Education classes. They've started training and just learning the basics about two months ago. Now, before the school year ends on March 27, the school is organising a small, friendly competition for our students just to give them a feel for what it's like. There are some prizes up for grabs - rash guards, custom Costa del Surf t-shirts designed by HLC students, and maybe even cookies! :-) Join us if you happen to be in the neighbourhood. But if you're not in the area, no worries! You can still participate by sponsoring -- you can donate prizes or things like surf leashes or board wax (things that are hard to find here in Cantilan). See you there!

Surfing for Physical Ed. class? Why not?! It teaches discipline, patience, and all that other good stuff. Most of all, it's fun! In this video, you'll see the students of the Hotchkiss Learning Center (HLC) in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur, Philippines practicing for their first grommet competition.
